In partnership with the Honolulu Academy of Arts, students on Oahu can take six different face-to-face elective art courses at the Linekona Academy Art Center including Fiber Arts, Sculpture, Drawing and Painting, Ceramics, as well as the newly added Jewelry Fabrication and Screen Printing classes.
The knowledgeable and experienced staff at the Honolulu Academy of Arts include professional artists who inspire our students to explore, discovery and express themselves through various mediums in both beginning and advanced levels of instruction.
In Fiber Arts 1 and 2, students learn techniques used in batik, fabric painting, fabric printing, tie dying, embroidery stitching, sewing, felting, basketry, weaving and hand papermaking.
In Sculpture 1, students carve hand-size sculptures out of plaster blocks, use hand-building techniques to create large clay sculptures and learn how to make molds for casting small objects in metal.
In Sculpture 2, students further their knowledge with advanced projects, including kinetic (moving) sculptures and metal fabrication involving the bending, shaping and soldering of copper.
In Drawing and Painting 1, students learn techniques of drawing, color theory and periods of painting, including Impressionism, Expressionism and Pop Art. In Drawing and Painting 2, students develop their own style, work independently and execute projects with the help of the instructor.
In Ceramics 1, students are introduced to art making with clay. Known as the oldest form of art making, students will use hand building techniques such as pinch pots, coiling, and slab-building, to create functional pots, animal forms and structures.
The introduction of wheel thrown pottery in Ceramics 2 is an extension of Ceramics 1. With an emphasis on developing creativity and individual expression using clay, students work with the instructor one-on-one.
We have two new courses. In Jewelry Fabrication, students learn the basics of metal fabrication by creating molds, casting silver/pewter, riveting, piercing, texturing and soldering metal sheets into wearable art. In Screen Printing, students use stencil making techniques and the photomechanical process to create multi-colored prints on paper and fabric.
At the end of each Term, students showcase their finished pieces to family and friends in an Art Exhibit held in the Linekona Academy Art Center. This is a great opportunity for to students to share their experiences and to see the work completed in other courses.
Art classes are held from 9am-11am or from 1pm-3pm every Tuesdays and Thursdays. For more information about our art courses and other electives offered at MBTA visit the Secondary tab at the top of the page and click on the Courses link.
